G2: this is because of entropy. nothing is perfectly efficient, and the more something is used, the more parts of it are wasted. of course, if it's never used at all, it all goes to waste. c'est la vie. also, sometimes you can counter this entropy by inputing the right amount of energy into your system at the right time. but it's difficult to say.
